| President Ron Lenhart extends a hearty welcome to all Stewards, Members, and all those interested in the labor movement, to our web site. This web site was designed to increase our communication with our membership and all working people. Visitors will be able to learn more about who we are and what we are all about. There is helpful information for members about their job, benefits, activities, and how to get more involved in their union. We will also have news on the site that pertains not only to members of Local 23, but to all working men and women.
A special section of this web site is devoted to the Shop Stewards of the Local with information on how to deal effectively with problems that they encounter in the workplace and general information that stewards will find helpful in performing their duties. To get into the Stewards area, Stewards will need to e-mail the Local and they will be assigned a password. Please send your e-mail to red@ufcw23.com identifying yourself and your work location and we will e-mail you with your password. We look forward to adding more information to the Stewards area on an ongoing basis.
Again, welcome all. We hope that all visitors find this site informative and helpful. |

| LOCAL 23 NEEDS YOUR PHONE NUMBER |
|
| Local 23 has found a great tool to increase our communication with our members, but it only works if we have your correct phone number. The service is called Tele-Blast and it can instantaneously phone members about important meetings, issues, votes, etc. We are asking members who want to be included in these phone messages to update their phone numbers with us. Your phone number WILL NOT be given to ANYONE. Please call the receptionist with your current phone number and we will do the rest. Thanks. |

| ORGANIZE -WHAT DOES IT MEAN AND HOW DO WE DO IT? |
|
| The dictionary defines it as: to persuade to join in a common cause. If you currently work in a union shop chances are good that you are already organizing workers everyday. You are talking with co-workers, especially the new hires, educating them about their rights and protections under the contract, informing them of upcoming union events and even discussing the endorsed candidates for political office. If you are not doing these things, you should be.
If you are working in a non-union environment you know that things could be a whole lot better if you had a union contract. You may also know that 7 out of 10 workers would join a union if not for the fear factor. You may be one of those workers who fear that they may lose their job if they try to form a union. FEDERAL LAW PROTECTS YOUR RIGHT TO FORM A UNION AND YOU CAN NOT BE
LEGALLY FIRED FOR TRYING TO FORM A UNION. When you educate yourself and your co-workers about your rights under federal law the fear will disappear. Union members on average enjoy higher wages, better health benefits and working conditions. | "Senator Barack Obama is the candidate of the American dream ", said Joe Hansen, President of our International Union, as he endorsed the Senator to become the Democratic nominee. "We will be mobilizing, organizing and energizing our members, their friends and families to make Senator Obama not just the Democratic nominee, but the next President of the United States.
Ron Lenhart, President of Local 23 agrees with Hansen. "It's time for a change in Washington D.C. if we ever hope to change America for the sake of our members and working families everywhere.
Senators Obama and Clinton both have a vision to change our country and have a proven track record of advocatingon behalf of everyday working people, however, the challenges that lie before us will require a monumental effort to build a movement of change. By reaching out to people of every political persuasion, Obama will unite them in a common purpose to restore the American dream. |

| MOUNTAINEER WORKERS ACCEPT NEW CONTRACT |
|
| On Wednesday April 9, an overwhelming majority of workers at the Mountaineer Racetrack and Gaming Resort voted to ratify their contract. The contract passed by a 109 to 8 margin. The pact includes wage improvements and a reduction in health benefit co-pays.
The decision to accept the new contract comes on the heels of a ten day strike which had more than 200 members patrolling picket lines in front of the Chester WV casino.
"The majority of workers seemed satified with this contract and are eager to return to work'" said Tony Helfer Local 23 Secretary-Treasurer. All striking workers will have the ability to return to their former positions as part of this agreement. |

| LOCAL 23 ENDORSES ROB MCCORD FOR STATE TREASURER |
|
| Rob McCord is one of Pennsylvania's leading business finance experts and a passionate Democrat who is running for Pennsylvania State Treasurer. As Treasurer, Rob will use his energy and experience to help create jobs for hard working Pennsylvanians, grow the state economy and stop wasteful spending in Harrisburg.
As a business leader--not a politician-- Rob has managed more than one billion dollars in assests and has raised money for start up companies that have created more tha 1,900 jobs in the state.
Before begining his career in business and finance, Rob spent nearly a decade working on Capital Hill where he specialized in budget and regulatory issues. Rob worked for a number of Democrats in the House and Senate, including former Senator Al Gore.
Local 23 President Ron Lenhart said, "Rob McCord is the right choice for working families for the office of State Treasurer.
